2020 Forgeron Cellars Malbec
Washington Malbec continues to significantly differentiate itself from the meaty, rigid Argentine and savory, lightly bitter Southern French versions of the varietal. This vintage of Forgeron Cellars Malbec, with its spritely, playful overlay and interplay of feminine flavors and masculine mouthfeel, leans into food pairings in a versatile, user-friendly way that underscores the point of this food friendly wine.
This vintage is all sorts of fun! Medium-bodied with a deft, lilting texture and opaque maroon hue. Absorbing aromas of Dark Opal basil, clove, cardamom, nightshade bloom, red lentils, violets (shrinking and otherwise), and cinnamon toast waft and wane. The palate shines with pomegranate, tart blueberry, and bright chimichurri. Supple and inviting with a, dare we say, joyful finish accented with a tinge of spearmint. If ever a wine could be called “yummy” it would be this one.
The 2020 vintage started as most years do and harvest was anticipated to be a bit earlier than the previous year. Around July we saw temperatures begin to change, which caused ripening process to slow and result in later picking dates, and we ended up harvesting just a few days apart on most varietals from the previous year. We did experience smoke through the season, but with precautions taken at the winery (bucket ferments) were able to avoid its impact entirely.
